So you're starting your backsplash design. You have your tile, have an idea of where you want to put it and you also think your ahead of the game because you also have a design in mind. But wait. Did you consider your grout color? Yes - that is a color choice as well.
As a Color Specialist in Charlotte, I know that choosing color for your home is a challenge let alone having to choose a grout color for your kitchen or bathroom. Keep in mind that choosing grout color depends on the look you want for your design. Like anything else, it's the details that make the job complete and grout is a detail that usually doesn't get much consideration until the end of the project.

Here you have a 1" x 1" glass tile in various shades of green. It looks great with your kitchen cabinets, your countertops your flooring and even your wall color. However, what color grout will you choose to complete the look?
Do you match the flooring?
Do you choose a shade lighter than your wall color?
Do you choose a color that is in the tile?
Do you choose a white because you know it'll match everything?
Do you choose a dark color for contrast?
Or do you hire somebody else to choose a color for you?
The answer to all those questions is “yes” but, it's a little more complicated than that. You CAN choose a grout color to match your flooring or wall color or tile but there's other options too. Look at the green glass tile at the top of this blog. How do you like the grout color? I think it looks pretty. Now look at the green glass and grout above. How do you like the grout color there? It looks nice too. So what's my point?
My point is that you can choose whatever color you want depending on the look you want. You can have your grout to blend, match, contrast, be the main focus of the backsplash design or just be a functional white and hold your tile together - it's what YOU want.
The green tiles above looked great in my opinion - both of them. Other than choosing a hot pink grout, many grout colors would look great with green and of course white tile. Having said that, what look do you want for your backsplash?
The top white tile and grout is a classic, white on white look and will go with everything in your kitchen. This tile design is good when your backsplash is NOT the main feature and you'd like it to sit quietly in your kitchen while something else, like a gorgeous countertop, shows off.
The white tile and darker grout make a bit more of a statement. The darker grout makes the white tile “pop” and is the main feature, or the first thing you notice, when you look at your backsplash. I actually like this design very much. I like that the grout is the main feature and actually the most important reason is because it's easier to keep clean. Even though you will, or should, seal your grout, the darker grouts are VERY forgiving. This is a crucial to keep in mind when choosing your grout color.
If you need help with your color choices for grout or even tile, let me know. I'd love to help.

very helpful post! grout color often is an afterthought, but it can really effect the overall "look" of the room.
ReplyDeleteGrout color is very important. I usually prefer to blend in with the tile, slightly lighter, so the tile shows off, not the grout. I find that with neutrals you really have to watch pink tones vs. yellow tones in grout. Great post! It is something people leave to the end when the tile guy is about to leave and says, what color grout do you want?
ReplyDeletewhat about multi color multi material tiles?
ReplyDeleteI would probably use a neutral the shares the same undertone as the tiles. You don't want 'match-matchy' but certainly something that coordinates or contrasts - just really watch those undertones.
Delete… or depending on the color of the tiles, go for something very contrasting like black or keep it contemporary with white. TIP: make sure you seal that grout if you go light :-)
Thanks Heather!
Hi Donna! Love your post! I'm still at a total loss though...we have the following going on in our kitchen:
ReplyDelete-grey slate floors with matching grout
-madura gold granite countertops
-honey oak colored cabinets
We decided on Casa Antica Mosaic Brown Glass tiles for the backsplash, but I'm stumped on grout color. Any suggestions?
