The Home Alone House 4 Sale & Needs Color!

I'm sure most of us remember the 1990 movie Home Alone with the screaming eight year old, Macaulay Culkin, who was accidentally left behind while his family flew to France for Christmas - funny movie! Well I heard last night on the news that the “Home Alone” house is for sale for a cool $2.4 million dollars.

So being a inquisitive Color Specialist, I had to snoop around the internet to see if I could find some photos of what the house looks like on the inside - and to see it's color, or in this case, lack of it.

From the outside it looks just like it did in the move but without the snow and Christmas decorations. I believe it's a 1920's Georgian style home located in Winnetka, Ill.

I think the stair runner in the movie was red but here it's shown almost a powder blue. I think I would change it to a burgundy/brown. It also looks like the paint sheen is a gloss going up the stairs, I'd keep that an eggshell or satin at the most. So, working with the stair color, I'd pick this smokey blue, maybe Benjamin Moore Seacliff Heights.

The dining room is VERY dated. Trees don't belong on the walls and the blue fabric on the chairs looks out of place. I chose this yummy brown upholstery fabric by Kravet which will match a bit better with the wood tones. As far as color, for the main wall I chose Mauve Desert and Antique Pearl for the ceiling also by Benjamin Moore. I would love to see the ceiling in a gloss.

The kitchen. I just worked with the colors that were in the tile and pulled out this warm gray. I think it looks nice with the white accents.

For the piano room I just tied in the colors from the kitchen and dining room. It's a large room with a lot of light so a darker color is needed here. Look how nice it looks with the color of the piano and the area rug.

Here is the final designer colors scheme and I think it looks great! I didn't show the rooms upstairs but they are the typical, dated jewel tones that also need to change.

So, if anyone would like to hire me to choose the RIGHT colors for this home, please contact me so we can get this home sold.

Fun movie, fun house and fun post!
I hope you've enjoyed it too.

What a great color scheme! I love the last combo. Do you share the colors? I'd love to know the greeny gray, 4th from the top. Thanks.

  2. A -the color swatches here are just "guides" and not actually color chips. If you're referring to the green/gray in the kitchen, try "Worldly Gray" by Sherwin Williams. This color will look crazy if you have stainless steal appliances in your kitchen. Good luck!
