The Beginners Guide To Using Brown in Your Home

If you're looking for a neutral to go in your home but you are are tired of lifeless gray and definitely don't want beige, what are your options?

Brown is a neutral too but there are so many things to consider before using it in your home.

  • Brown goes with just about every color which makes it a great neutral to have in your home.
  • Brown is a dark hue so be careful where you use it
  • Don't use brown in a North facing room.
  • Use brown as an accent wall or stripe in a room.
  • Have a large bonus room? Use a wide stripe around the perimeter of the room to ground it.
  • Be careful of the other color you use with brown. You don't want to go back to the 70's
  • Use bright greens and blues to coordinate the browns in your home.
  • Love earth-tones but don't want to date your home? Use brown towels to add drama to a bathroom.
  • There are many shades of brown. The ones that look like chocolate look the best in the home.
  • Try copper or brushed gold hardware in your home. Stainless and Nickel of course are out.
  • To get the true look of brown on your walls you'll need two heavy coats of paint or use a tinted primer.
So go ahead and use brown in your home. I have it on one accent wall in my bathroom and it' looks great! Cozy next to the tub and I find it very realizing. No cool blues for me in the bathroom!
