Say No to “Matchy-Matchy"

I've heard the phrase “Matchy-Matchy” throughout the years but it seems to be rearing it's ugly head lately. It's a really important design element that needs to be addressed and explained.

To begin with, what is “Matchy-Matchy?”

Well, it's exactly like the names implies - matchy - everything in the room matches - to the T. From ceiling to floor, wallpaper, paint, carpeting, tiles, bedding,  - EVERYTHING IS THE SAME COLOR - aka, a very monochromatic look.

Monochromatic color

I'm not saying this look should not be used, a Monochromatic theme can be very striking in the right content. But, for the most part, mixing up the right colors, styles and interior design will provide a “fuller” look that certainly offers more dimension. Sometimes a monochromatic look comes across boring and perhaps a very unchallenged way to decorate.

Maria Killam of Colour Me Happy  has a post on The Problem With an All Gray Room. She talks about having lack of color in a room and designing it with the same color “from top to bottom”. Click on the link and read what she has to say about it. While you're there, you'll want to follow her blog - it's one of the best!

Here are a few links I found that will explain it a bit more.

Jean Molesworth Kee also has a fabulous blog called The Painted Room. In one of her latest posts about a Trendspotting event she recently went to, present, was Washington DC's most current designers. When you have top Designers such as Zoe FeidmanEric Kole and Alex Sanchez, saying, “Matchy bedroom sets are a no-no”, that would certainly be good design advice to follow.

  2. Great post, having an accent color or a contrast in a monochromatic space really just sets everything off perfectly!
