How to choose color to match your stone

You’ve just purchased the stone, tile or granite for your home project. You’ve spent umpteen hours researching collections, colors and textures to ensure that you have picked the right one. That was a HUGE undertaking and it took a lot of time, energy and money to choose “the perfect stone” for your home.

Let’s say you’ve purchased this monochromatic Hyde Park™ stone for your fireplace. A short time later your installation is complete you step back and look at your room. Everything looks great but something doesn’t look right. You check the stone – it’s fine. You check the grout color – it’s fine. Everything is perfect but what looks odd about the room? Than you realize, the color of your room doesn’t match the stone! They are in no way, shape or form related to each other watch so ever. So what do you do?

Not a bad choice in wall color but certainly not the best.

First of all, don’t panic. It’s very easy to choose the perfect color for your room and I’ll show you how.

The secret to choosing the perfect wall color is to pull a color or two directly from the stone itself. I’ve already picked three Benjamin Moore colors in the first photograph at the beginning of this post. There you can clearly see the stone is various shades of blue and gray, which in fact, compliments most decors. Soft blues and grays are trending high right now so those colors are a great way not only to match your stone but also to stay current in color trends.

Not crazy about blue or gray? That’s ok because if you look very close, you’ll see that there are several colors in this stone. The ones you see first are the dominant or obvious colors but look at the colors that make up the subtle areas and you’ll see green, tan, peach and cream. All these colors would be great choices for wall color. How do you know? If the color looks great in the stone, it’ll look great on your wall. Mother Nature already hand picked the color scheme for you!

Here’s how the room could look with some colors pulled from the fireplace stones.

A warm gray really looks great in this room. The gray is a soft background which makes the stone be the first element that is noticed when you enter this room. If your furniture happens to be in the gold family as shown here, that would be the best scenario since we all know that gray and yellow (golds) look amazing with each other.

Like the blue? This is a great option if you want a little more color in the room. Keep in mind the style of home you have. If this were a cottage by the beach, blue would be a great choice to bring the outside colors into your home.

COLOR TIP: Be really careful when you choose blue for your room. If you go too light, your room may look like a nursery. Make sure you have enough gray undertones in the blue to make it “mature” enough for your room.

And last but not least  - cream. You can give this room a nice monotone look by using various shades of cream from light beige to a deeper gold. Bring other colors in with accent pillows and throws (shown in photo) for just a little pop of color.

Wasn’t that easy? Now look back at each room and see which one you like the best. If you notice, choosing the gray wall color will make the fireplace stone “grays” more noticeable. If you choose the blue color, the blues seem to pop out more and in the cream room; the tan sections of the stone are the more noticeable hues. See what the RIGHT color choices can do to enhance your stone and complete the look of your room?

Charles Luck has such beautiful stone. You’re project isn’t complete at installation – take it one step further and make sure you have the right wall color to really bring out the beauty of the stone. As you can see from these photographs it will make a HUGE difference.

  1. You are so right, Donna. Getting the stone color and the paint color to work well together is a challenge. Love the gray walls with that stone above.

I'm doing a give away on my blog. A wonderful 8' round flokati rug!
