Heirloom Art Turns Into Color for Your Home

Let's say you've hired an Artist to paint a special, one of a kind, watercolor for you. It's a painting of your home that one day may be handed down from generation to generation and perhaps become an heirloom.

Here's the scenario. You have this highly valued painting in your living room. You hang it over the fireplace and love it but then you look around you notice that it doesn't match ANYTHING in the room. How cool would it be to have your living room designed around the colors that are in the painting?

There's no better way to come up a designer color scheme than to choose colors from an inspiration piece that an artist already chose for you. What do I mean by this? Well as an avid painter myself, we choose colors for a painting like you would choose colors for a room. They all have to be related and should coordinate with each other on that canvas. Now I know there are exceptions to the rule but in the case of painting homes, we know that these colors will be very complementary towards each other.

Here's my suggestion. Look at the painting and pull two dominant colors or two colors that you like the most right from the painting. In this case I chose the pale yellow and a light blue. Now there are a few ways that you can develop this palette. This is what you can do:

  • Paint your room yellow.
  • Paint your room blue.
  • Paint your room yellow with one blue accent wall (vise versa)
  • Paint your room yellow and use blue in just accents in home decor (v.v)
  • Try the pale yellow on the ceiling.
  • Use these colors in just your drapery with white walls.

… you get the idea. The possibilities are endless. Just keep in mind that using a valued piece of art for color inspiration is an EXCELLENT way to come up with a color scheme - it's already done for you!
