The Blue Basil • The color of Thai food

This restaurant is getting a big post because it's really big on taste and color.

The Blue Basil has been opened for about 5 weeks now. It's located in the Blakeney shopping center. If you like hot and spicy Thai food, you'll love it here. When I heard that this restaurant was coming to town the first thing that came to my mind was “isn't basil green? Why do they call it 'Blue" Basil”? Well I found out today why. But first, I have to tell you about my meal.

I ordered this dish which is the Green Curry and yes I ordered it based on the name alone. Green curry? How cool is that? Along with the purple of the eggplant and the red pepper, this was a very colorful meal. The curry sauce was actually greener then shown here which was a bit odd at first. Usually when a sauce is green, that is not a good sign. Let me tell you this dish was off the charts good!

Going back to the name Blue Basil, I had to find out how the owner Rick Taing came up with this name. “It's really quite simple” he stated. “The basil in Thailand has blue veining and purple stems giving the green basil a very blueish tint”. How cool is that! I'm talking color to the owner of the Blue Basil and finding out how he named his restaurant! I know that's small beans to some people but it actually made my day. I learned a “color factoid”.

I know the colors in the photographs are more vibrant because of lighting and everything is set up just right. The sauce isn't covering the peppers, the eggplant is placed on top to show it's true color but these meals are still loaded with color and flavor.

I highly recommend the Blue Basil. When you go inside the restaurant, it's a very cozy decor and you have to see the flooring. I have never seen a floor like that before. It looked like tile that is similar to a brick shape but it was painted in a very high gloss epoxy. I'm not even sure what it is but I will be sure to ask owner Rich Taing during my next visit to this very colorful restaurant. Also, ask for Temy. She can really guide you to the best food choice if your not sure.

  2. Mary, thank you so much! As you know, a good Designer /Color Specialist is the one who is more creative and one who thinks outside the box. I like to keep my outlook on color unique and fun for others. Sometimes when you view the blogs and websites of other designers they all look the same and a bit stuffy. I design my sites based on what I feel my clients would like to read. Simple, fun and unique. I look forward to reading about you! Thank you again and enjoy your day Mary.
