What Is The Best Color To Paint A Kitchen When Your Kitchen Doesn't Have Any Walls?

It sounds like an easy question doesn't it? What color should I paint my kitchen? Well it's not that easy to pick one color for the core of your home, the room where your family spends the most time in. It's even more challenging when your kitchen doesn't really have much wall space.

Before I start talking about paint color for your kitchen, let's talk about a few facts first.  First of all, we know that most kitchen are mostly composed of cabinetry, appliances, back splash and sometimes windows. This leaves very little wall space to work with.

You can see this kitchen is the dreaded orange kitchen that I always talk about. Sometimes they are more orange like shown here and some times they are more yellow-orange like shown in the link I just gave you. Are these ugly kitchens? No, not by a long shot but they do have a dominant color which limits you to your color choices.

Here is a white kitchen which gives you  more options for wall color but where are the walls? See what I mean? You have just a little wall space around the window and perhaps on an adjoining wall but that it!

So what is the best color to paint a kitchen when your kitchen doesn't have walls? Well of course your kitchen has walls but you really have to be careful of your color choices here.

Here you have contemporary kitchen again with very little wall space  - and a fish tank which is very cool - and they painted the wall black for contrast. This is what I refer to a “puzzle kitchen”. I know I have all these strange names for kitchen designs but it really helps describe the point I'm trying to make. Go take a look at that link and see what I mean by puzzle.

The design element that I don't like about this kitchen is that the black strip across the top of the cabinets really takes away from the fish tank. It's impressive that this kitchen even has a fish tank in it so why would you want to put such a bold color to distract from it? Poor color choice - that's why.

Let's talk a little more about this kitchen. What color would you use instead of black? What color would I use?

Silver Spring. Why? Because I like the coolness of this gray and it has enough blue in it to relate to the fish tank without distracting from it. I'd also put white fan coral on top of the cabinets for a little interest and again to relate to the tank. Sometimes - well most of the time - less is more when it comes to your paint color options in the kitchen.

For the most part I gravitate towards some type of warm gray for the kitchen. It'll either be a perfect match to the backsplash or the coordinate with the counter tops. Gray will also play off your stainless steel appliance and really just sit quietly in the background without screaming some crazy color that does't make sense in the overall design.

If you need help with your kitchen color choices, you can always send me a picture of your kitchen and I can recommend a few color choices or you. I have a great virtual color service that will help you along your way or at least save you some time and money by suggestion the right color choices for you.
