What's in a Name?

We all wondered how “they” come up with all those names for our paint colors. Some names are from food, emotions, objects, nature, animals and really just about anything both animate and inanimate. Well last week I was choosing a color for a kids playroom and came across “Starfish” which is a Benjamin Moore color.

It didn't hit me at first how this orange hue was related to the starfish or was it one of those colors that was just pulled out of a hat. I can't believe it took be so long to get the connection! Crikey, I only lived on Long Island for 28 years and finding starfish on the beach was like finding acorns by an oak tree.

Anyway, when I was in my office compiling my clients color portfolio it hit me -  THE EYE! This color is exactly like the color of a starfishes eye! Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the type of starfish I'm referring to. I guess each fish is different depending on where you find it.

The starfish was basically a beige color but it has a dot on it, and I'm guessing it was an eye, that was this exact orange.

I love when a paint color name actually looks like the color. Here is STARFISH.
