Choosing color for you ceiling is not as easy as you think it is. It's more than just saying “oh I want a blue ceiling and I like THIS blue so blue it is!”
When you're choosing color for a ceiling you have to look at all the other colors in the room. Will it coordinate or will it clash? Will it stick out like a sore thumb and just look like someone wanted color on the ceiling or will it blend beautifully and complement the room?
Should you make your ceiling darker than the wall color or lighter? Again keep in mind if you make your ceiling darker, it will be the first thing you notice as you enter the room. Do you want the ceiling to be the feature item in the room? Is it that great that it needs such a beautiful color?
COLOR TIP: Before you decide on ANY ceiling color, make sure you view your color chip upside down. In other words, hold the color chip up over your head and look under it just like it'll be viewed on the ceiling. It's all about how the light is hitting the ceiling color and you'll be amazed how different it looks.
So study your space, look at the height of your ceiling, choose a color and if everything looks good, go for it! Paint your ceiling and remember, if you don't like it you can always repaint it. It's just a gallon of paint and some time. Keep in mind to have fun with your color choices and if you really are stuck for suggestions, call a Color Expert for help. That's what we're here for!

Thank you Gloria. Clients are really becoming aware of the 5th wall and asking to color it - and I'm ok with that!
DeleteGreat post! You are absolutely right to suggest they put it up and look under it. I always tape the color on a larger poster board to the ceiling with painter's tape..
ReplyDeleteI love to see clients faces when they see how very different the color looks upside down. Thanks Lisa!
