Popular Color Choices in Charlotte

As individual as we all are, when it comes to color for our homes, you'd be surprised how alike many of us are. After studying and designing color palettes in South Charlotte for the past five years, I see a definite change in color trends and paint brands. I also see a strong similarity in the colors that are requested for specific rooms. I'm going to list them in bullet format for easy reading. Here's what I've found:
  • Five years ago, the popular interior paint brand was Sherwin Williams
  • Sherwin Williams is #1 for just exterior color
  • Benjamin Moore is #1 for interior color
  • Blue is the popular color choice for the Master Bedroom
  • Muted, soft purple is the second choice for the Master
  • Coastal colors are still popular for the Master Bathroom
  • Coastal colors are still the #1 requested color palette for the entire home
  • Little girls still love pink and purple
  • Young boys still love blue and green
  • Beige is becoming very unpopular
  • Gray is replacing beige in foyers
  • Clients are asking for “lighter and brighter” colors
  • Eggshell is out
  • Washable matte is in
  • Clients are asking about ceiling colors, replacing whites
  • No one has asked for Behr paint
  • Some Valspar colors are used from the Historic Preservation palette
  • Olympic is never even mentioned except for deck stain
  • Most husbands don't care what colors are chosen for the house
  • Marvin is where most of my clients are
  • Waxhaw is second
  • Clients are willing to try Color Stories regardless of the price as long as the color fits
  • Many husbands do not like green
  • Orange [Tangerine Tango] was never even an option in homes, not even in an accent color
  • Tiffany Blue [turquoise family] is a popular color for a teen girl's room
  • Offices are still fairly dark colors
  • Red dining rooms are out
So there are the most popular factoids I can think of for now. But if I have to state what the major change is in the past five years it would be that people are asking for Benjamin Moore paint instead of Sherwin Williams. Keep in mind that I do not sway their decision in anyway. I wait or ask to see what THEIR preference is. I never state my opinions in any consult even if asked, I just tell my clients what  the norm or popular choice is.

So there you have it! Some color and paint facts for the South Charlotte [Marvin, Waxhaw] areas. I can't wait to see how it's going to change in the next five years. I'll keep you posted.

  1. Ah ha! I knew it! Red dining rooms are going out! I have one of those red dining rooms and I keep staring at it trying to decide which way to go with it. This was a great post. So timely and I appreciate your professional point of view and what you have been seeing out "there" lately.

It's funny about the red dining room. My clients actually say that they don't want a red DR because they read my blog and agree. So funny!
