What colors look good with African art?

Like there isn't enough to think about when you have to choose color for your home you also have to consider the art that may be on it as well. If you choose color that is too bright, it'll distract form the art, too pale and your art may appear to be floating in space.

When I choose color for a home, I go room to room with the homeowners and find out what activity goes on in the room. Playroom, kids play. Living room, watch TV, bonus rooms could be anything from man caves to offices. This is really important for me to know so I can choose a color that will fit the needs of that particular room. For instance, you wouldn't want a soothing spa color in your exercise room right? You'd want a color that would give you a little energy to get through your workout right? Right. So having said that, my last client used his bonus room to display his African art. He also spent 90% of his time working in his home office also in the same room.

So he told me that his art had a lot of dark brown wood tones and his sculptures were also browns. He as some other artwork but dark brown seemed to be the dominant color of his gallery. Since the couple just moved in, nothing - not even a chair - was in the home yet so I had to rely on his description.

So what color goes well with African art? Oh, more more thing, they also exercise in this room to. So we have office, art gallery and exercise room. The colors I would choose for these three rooms would be completely different but since it's one room and a multipurpose room at that, I have to choose just one color to fit all these requirements.

So what color would you choose? Blue? Blue would be nice for an office. Orange? Great color to workout in. Gray? Perfect to display art. Here's what I choose.

We all know that this type of green looks beautiful with rich browns so there - the art will look fantastic. Green is a soothing color which is great to have as an office wall color when the stress level gets a bit high. As as far as exercising, this yellow based green is just bright enough to keep you motivated for your workout. It's an overall perfect color for their bonus room and they loved it!

Hopefully I'll get pictures to post when they are completely moved it.

  1. Given the variety of uses for the room, I think you chose the perfect colour. It has a bit of everything you were looking for, and I bet the art will look spectacular against it. Looking forward to seeing some pictures :-)
