What Color Should I Paint my Front Door?



Hi Donna

I was reading your blog about painting front doors. This is something that I have been procrastinating about for a long time. Would a black or deep charcoal look weird on a front door? My roof and gutters are black, and may house is white. Or should I just leave it white? I was thinking I would add matching shutters. Your suggestions would be very helpful as I have never had such a difficult time making a decision. I have included a picture attachment

There are so my colors you can choose for your front door without going with the typical charcoal or black. For instance, my front door is an eggplant (I have a gray house) but you have to be super careful what color you choose because when the sun hits it, the dominant undertone will come out.

Choosing red is another typical choice, pretty but do you want to have ANOTHER red door in the neighborhood?

Although tempting, you don't want to be too trendy with yellow or a green door. This door is very pretty but do you have HOA's (Home Owners Associations) restrictions to consider?

Let's say you decide to be a little trendy and want to express your love for color. You chose something that really pops, like orange. Try it out for a day or two, see how you like it and how it looks with your home. If you really don't like it - you can always paint over it!! The great thing about painting your front door is that it's just a quart of paint and maybe an hour of your time. It's a great project to do when you have those creative juices flowing.

    Orange color door front is nice. Orange — it demands attention, thus having that color, your door will be notice. And it will give more light to your house.

      Not all homes can pull off an orange front door - just like not everyone looks good with purple hair.

      I also like the orange door. It looks strong and bold. But you are right, Donna. Strong colors may not go well with every door. The best way to know is to do some color matching and choose a pigment that does not clash with the texture and colors found nearby. Take note of the natural hues of the surrounding buildings and landscape.

      A front door should be like a mans tie - make it a great color while keeping the rest (the house) subdued.
