What Color Should I Paint My Closet?

Closets By Design

The closet is actually a very important “room” or space in the home. It really can make or break a home sale if there's insufficient closet space. So, taking it one step further, when designing your closet, also keep color in mind.

For the most part when I'm at a color consultation I always ask my client if they'd like to paint their closet. The majority of the time it's a no because after all, “why do I need color in my closet” anyway?

There are several reason why you'd want to paint your closet:

1. It's probably still the contractors beige or white.
2. It's probably a flat or matte sheen which gets dirty very easily.
3. It looks unfinished.
4. It's hard to keep clean.
5. Painting is a minor detail that will have a high impact if you have to sell your home.
6. It will look better.

Reasons you aren't painting your closet:

1. I don't know what color to choose for my closet.
2. I'd have to take all the shelves out or paint around them.
3. It's a HUGE project.
4. No one will look inside my closet.
5. It's just a closet.

The best time to paint your closet of course is when you first move into your home and it's still empty. You'll more than likely have some type of wire shelving to paint around but it will definitely be worth it.

Now to the question - What Color  Should I Paint My Closet?

When I'm designing a color scheme for a home, 9/10 I have a fairly neutral color in the foyer and hallways.

Benjamin Moore Whites
Most of the time I take the foyer/hallway color and also put it in the laundry room and the closets.

DESIGN TIP: Keep the color in your closet subtle and neutral. There really is no need to put substantial color in this room. Here's why.

Neutral Closet

This graphic represents a neutral closet. The background is an off white or beige and the rectangles are your clothes. We all have just about every color from lights to darks in our closets so having the background a neutral will visually make the closet more appealing and easier to see. It's really a small detail that will make a large impact in your closet.

Now this closet was painted the same coastal blue that's been trending for quite some time. So many people have this color in their bedroom and have taken it into their closet but look what happens. It's very unsettling to see all this color in a closet. The color of your clothes fight with the blue and it just becomes a mess. It's like painting every room in your home a different and unrelated color. It doesn't make sense and it's just ugly! By the way - the color of the “clothes” are the same in both these graphics but see how different they look?

So my friends, whether you have a very large walk in closet or a very small closet, take the time out to finish it. Just paint it neutral, perhaps a creamy beige, and it'll look great as a background color for your wardrobe.

Here are some darker neutrals if you have a really large closet and just want to cozy it up a bit. Make sure you have good lighting in here to!

  1. I painted my closet a pretty 'spa' blue color. It is a great neutral (even though it's a color)and it makes me happy when I walk in. I had to paint because I had to fix a moisture problem, so i chose color! I can't think of a reason why someone wouldn't want to do this either.

    1. You're closet sounds pretty Christina. Many people have a very neutral color palette in clothes - mostly black, beige and white so in that case, a color may work. As a matter of fact, my sister in law has mostly black and white in her closet so a wall color such as spa blue, would look awesome.

My closet is filled with just about every color under the sun so I would need to keep the walls very bland.

      Thanks so much!

I am so happy I read this article, it has been a major help. I want to spend my weekend redoing my closet- and think painting it is a must. I was going to go with a "harmonious" blue that I want to put in my laundry room, but am inspiring to find a cozy, neutral instead. Thanks for the tip!

  4. Thanks for the great advice! Makes perfect sense. I almost painted my closet some crazy colors because I got a ton of paint for free from Sherwin Williams :-) But all the colors are a little bold. They gave me some beige as well so I will use that.
I got the paint for free by asking the sales guy at Sherwin Willams if they had any mis-tint paint for sale. The guy said he would GIVE it to me as long as I took it all. I ended up carting home over 40 gallons of paint! Much of it was their top of the line model!

  6. I saw your comment on Maria Killam's blog today, and I agree that strong colors aren't ideal for closets. I'm a professional painter. I use semigloss or satin finish in closets. It's easier to keep clean.

    1. I clearly agree with you. I was surprised to see that she would suggest such a strong color for a closet. That green will clash so badly with the clothes. I'd love to see a soft white in a satin - perfect! Thank for your comment :-)

I don't really agree that the closet should be a safe neutral color. As long the color isn't neon or completely ugly I don't have any issues with a strong color. A deep wine red looks gorgeous in my walk in closet... but then again, most of my clothes are fairly neutral.

I painted my room a grey color called dark pewter. I wanted to paint my closet the same color, since the carpet in my room and closet are the same color. Is gray a neutral enough color to paint a closet? It's a dark gray.

    1. Gray is a good choice to paint the inside of a closet but I'd try to use a light gray.

Thanks for this useful advice. Do you have any recommendations for colors for the exterior (doors) of the closet for a kid's room? My daughter wants pink - I'm looking for a compromise!

  11. Hello my closet is 9x9 and is a walk-thru closet to the bath of our bedroom. We just took out some walls, moved the door, new flooring ect. This has been a heck of a project. It's also our dressing area.
So paint? I painted it a color called sophistication. Husband said it was to dark. I picked up 2 gallons of paint on sale at Walmart. 1 is country white the other is premixed called blue light. Both by Colorplace.
I told husband I needed to paint each color and see what we liked. I hate yellow beige. I'm a blonde, with cool tones. I wear teal, black, red, burgundy and grays. Remember it's a dressing area hair and makeup included. I came home and he was doing s good deed. But the room was repainted and YELLOW!
I'm gonna go with the blue light now. He thinks it's to blue. It's actually like the dress, is it blue or white or gold. No gold, lol. But it changes tones when you move thru the room.
So what kinda suggestions do you have for my project?
