A Designers nightmare. Too many undertones!

It doesn't happen often but I kid you not when I shake in my boots a bit when I see all these undertones in one area.

From “orange” kitchen cabinets to …

a pinkish backsplash to …

a gray countertop to …

a yellow undertone floor tile to …

a very orange wood flooring in the surrounding room to …

the dreaded pinky beige carpet in the living room, that can be seen from the kitchen.

This is definitely is a challenge when all these colors are in one room and you need a wall color to tie it in. What color do you choose? A taupe? A off white? A gray?

Or do you forget the neutrals and just blast in some color?

Well there's one more factor that I forgot to mention and it's lighting. The color that you choose to tie in your kitchen kaleidoscope really depends on the type of lighting you have. Do you have a lot of natural light, north light, florescent light, yellow light?

You have to look at the overall picture, take all these factors into consideration and just look at the paint chips in your kitchen. Have no more than 4 to really consider and see how you like the color during different times of the day.

Paint out a sample or two for the two runners up and decide which sits well with you at the end of the day.

Need more help? Contact me and I can help you through the undertone madness that, sometimes happens but it's certainly possible.

The right paint for this stituation is benjamin moore sherwood tan or sherwin williams latte. These colors work with everything!

    1. Both are pretty colors but may be a little too dark for overall color - at least here in Charlotte. Usually in kitchens I keep the hues much lighter. Do you use them often? I'd be curious to know what state you live in. Always have to consider lighting right?

      Thanks for the color info!

I am alittle late making it to the table but if this situation existed in my house I would have to do a complete overhaul or move out. Yes it would drive me that crazy. However if asked my opinion for someone elses space I would recommend a gray-green paint color. A few Benjamin Moore gray greens I love are

    soft fern
    mesquite(on greener side)
    nantucket gray
    mosaic tile(olive gray)
saybrook sage(just a hint of blue)
    guilford green
    paris rain
    cheyenne green
    louisburg green
tree moss(mossy green with muted tones)
    vale mist
    ctober mist

    1. Oddly, I knew what color you were talking about. I've used that one a lot to :-)

You have great taste in color. Are you a Designer?

Thankyou for the complement. My mother is a retired designer and my father owned a painting & decorating business for 30 odd years. Bunny Williams and Charlotte Moss were
designer favorites at our house.I am often asked by family, friends and friends of family paint color advice in which I readily give.By the way I live in the Nashville area.
