Designing a Color Scheme for Your Kitchen

Tile Connection

There are so many factors to consider when designing a kitchen. Here are a few:

  • What type of countertop should I buy?
  • How is quartz different from granite?
  • What style of kitchen cabinets should I have?
  • Do I need a backslash?
  • What type of tile should I use for the backsplash?
  • What color grout should I use?
  • Do I need a special type of lighting in the kitchen?
  • What appliances are the most efficient?
  • What kind of storage do I need for my kitchen?
  • What are the kitchen trends now?
  • What color should I paint my kitchen?

Now these are just a few of the hundreds of questions you will be asking yourself during the design process of your kitchen. But there is one more very important question that you should add to your list. Here it is:

Will my kitchen design
coordinate with the rest of my home?

Open floor plan

When you have a home with an open floor plan, it's crucial that the color and design flow from room to room. Even it you don't have  this type of home your color and design scheme needs to coordinate.

Here I have an example of how different rooms of your home can and should match your kitchen. The colors don't have to be the same in each and every room but they certainly should be close to each other in some way.

The main colors in the dining room are blue and gold. Bring in some blue into the kitchen (countertop) with a neutral wall (beige). Now for the living room, bring in a blue (navy and a shade of gold - cross between the gold and kitchen color) but add a complementary accent color for your drapery

The accent color (burnt orange) ties in with the flooring and keep this in mind for your kitchen cabinets.

Think of kitchen design as a puzzle. Each piece of the puzzle, each room, has to fit perfectly in order to be complete. It does take a lot of time, money and thought. This is where you can't skimp on your budge - hire the professionals to help you out just to make sure you're on the right track.

  1. Great tips! I would start off with the number 1 factor in designing a kitchen: budget! The kitchen in your photo looks gorgeous! Would love to see the whole kitchen. I bet it has a lot of great details!

  2. Budget is always key Pam -even when just choosing a color scheme. Can they afford a whole color color consultation or a room by room option. It's good to find out what budgets are before starting any project.

Aren't those beautiful kitchens? I took the photos from The Tile Connection. Click on the credit links to see more.
