I must say, I'm highly disappointed in the "next" color prediction by Color Marketing Group. Gold - really? How old is that? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
CMG |
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE this color and have it in my home. But, I've been loving it for over 9 years already!! Nothing new there. I wouldn't dare even suggest this color for my clients anymore.
I've been sitting back for the past few weeks reading, observing and watching these big companies brag about “the one”. They claim they research and diagnose the economy and the trends of ours surrounding countries and politics for color clues. If you ask me, it's spin the tail on a color. What was the though process for gold? Purple? Pink? And are we really going to use these colors in our homes?
Come on people, let's get into something new and exciting!! How is gold new and exciting? I've been reading post after post, tweet after tweet about how disappointed people are in this “new prediction”. So I know I'm not the only one thinking that this color is a little long in the tooth.
I don't even want to talk about Honeysuckle or Vintage Wine anymore. I do however, applaud Glidden for nailing a refreshing color for 2011 - Lime Twist. It's a color that makes people feel refreshed. Not a baby pink “just for a girls room” color or “it looks like a funeral parlor color”. You know if I'm having these thoughts of color there are millions out there too thinking the same thing.
So what would I choose if I were “on the board” of guessers color forecasters? Sometimes the answers are smack in the middle of your face. Answers are so close to you that you can't see them. Did that ever happen to you? I say color should be back to basics, less is more with an out of the box thought process.
I still say that Salmon should be the next color to gain popularity. Why? Because of what it represents. We all know that salmon is loaded with vitamins and omega 3's to ward off many diseases from Alzheimer's to Heart Disease. We're all trying to live a healthy lifestyle now, why aren't we choosing color in our home to represent that? I know some of you are going to say "but honey is heathy”. Let's just move up to the 21st century in terms of color already.
Another reason I like this color direction is because it will compliment most blue color schemes that were hot and heavy in 2010. It's a great color to start toning down the blue - especially if people are starting to tire of turquoise. I would combine this color with the ever popular green for too many reasons to mention in this blog.
I chose this color at my color consultation last week. It's called New Haven Clay and it's a Valspar color. It's coordinates with the home's wood stains, flooring, granite countertop and of course the other colors I chose which were the popular grey/yellows that are popping up.
What other fresh colors will go with this fave of mine? There are boatloads of combos but here are just a few that you don't usually see in one's home - which is the direction to go.
Also, combine these with black, white and grays for a very modern feel. |
I can hear the remarks now about these colors but just think a minute. You can always combine a newer color with an older one to make it comfortable for you. Here are some colors that have been around a while and most of you I know have these in your home - that include me too so don't feel bad. An I do this for a living!
My job as a Color Specialist is to choose amazing color for YOUR home. And I've told this to my clients before. If you hire me to come into your home, let's choose something fabulous - not like your neighbors safe color scheme.
What would you choose if you had to
predict a color trend and why?
Hi, Donna:
ReplyDeleteI think we don't have to follow trends literally in interior design, but they tell us what is going to be produced by the industry. Salmon isn't either new, at least in Spain: it has been VERY used to paint living rooms and socialized spaces as long as I can remenber back in my life. So, there is nothing new under the sun, just trying to do the Color Work in the best possible way. This is my thought at least.
Not loving gold either. Every home in my area is dosed with it. I understand emerald green is the new trend in Paris from the recent home and gift fair. Anything but gold....again.
ReplyDeleteHi Isabelle :-)
ReplyDeleteI never said Salmon is new I just suggested that Salmon would be a great color to highlight because of what it represents both for paint color and in the industry. I would love to see your Spain and it's beautiful colors! Thanks!
Carla - yes, just about every home is dosed with gold but I do like the idea of emerald green coming back in. I had it in my foyer in 1990. It was a "gem" of a welcome!
I'm with you-- gold is such a snooze! And my kitchen is gold! Needless to say it's on the repaint list. :) I can't quite get on board with the salmon, though. Maybe it'll grow on me. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts, Donna.
Heidi - Salmon does look a bit odd represented on the computer but I've seen it in homes and it's pretty impressive. Depending on your lighting and what bulbs you have, this color really cozies up to most homes.
ReplyDeleteGold paint is definitely not new! Must be how they are using it. Gold and greys or gold and silvers are a newer combination, but gold by itself is definitely not new. All of us in Charlotte have gold in our homes!
ReplyDeleteI think you are spot on with Salmon as a color choice. Personally, i am not a fan of it, but as a compliment color, I could use it.
ReplyDeleteI like berry tones (raspberry, etc.) Recently bought a salmon sweater that was advertised as coral.
ReplyDeleteDonna, firstly, I must agree that gold has never been an option for me when it comes to walls but then, here in the UK with our blue light, it would look almost green. (It looks incredible in Mediterranean countries like Italy because the light is so yellow)
ReplyDeleteAs for your favoured Salmon, I can't say that it would ever classify as a 'healthy' choice of colour for me. It screams 1980's at me and worse than that it's the old aunty of Peach! (I know that we will always disagree on this because you love your Peach and that's OK.)
Look at 'Faded Rose' - top RHS - that's about as much Salmon as I can take...

Now, because I like to challenge myself, I pulled together some other colours which are in that tone but, in my opinion, are more modern and relevant to what is going on in the industry, today. Personally, I find 'Faded Rose' and 'Sherbet 'uplifting and supportive colours but I would be very nervous of putting green anywhere near these colours unless it was very quiet and well behaved.

Incidentally, 'Salmon' is one of the authorised new building colours for Spain - new buildings can be painted in 1 of 4 'earthy' colours and it works because the light is so strong that it bleaches the colour down. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Isabel, but someone told me this was so.)
Heather - that's interesting how you said gold would look green in the UK lighting. I would love to see that. I can only speak for the lighting in NC, NY and PA and what colors work best in their lighting. Hopefully one day I can get to Spain an the UK, after all, my husband works for US Airways and we get to travel for free.
ReplyDeleteI like the jpgs you sent - the colors are nice. About salmon, would I have it in my home? Absolutely not. I personally don't like the color but I do like what it represents. Gold? I do have it in my home and it's bit luminous with the NC sun but was just perfect when I lived in PGH. To me, it's a 'feel good' color.
I would really like to people think out of their comfort zone when it comes to color. I know there are a few designers now working on new color palettes that I think are great. I'm actually working on something now representing the basics of life - food, water and heat. I should have a post shortly.
Heather, thanks so much!
