Art for Your Home

When thinking about choosing art for your home, I feel that original art work is the best. What I like to do is incorporate the color scheme of the room into the painting ensuring a perfect match. If you're unable to paint your own than look at the artwork of other artists. The reason I like original paintings (this does NOT include prints) is that's it's one of a kind art. If I'm going to spend money on artwork, I certainly don't want anyone else to have the same painting in their home. It's a good investment.

What Do You Put on Your Ledge?

Both photos by Maria Killam

I was reading a blog post from the very talented Maria Killam of Colour Me Happy this morning and she was talking about ways to create art for her home. The subject of 'the ledge' came up.

As pictured in her photographs, you can see the awkward ledge that many of us have in our homes. Which brings me to the question; What do you put on your ledge?

I rarely get stumped with color or design but I'll admit it when I do.
  • Why do we have these ledges anyway?
  • What were the builders thinking?
  • Do they serve a purpose other than collecting dust?
  • Is there really a ladder that reaches that high?

These are all legitimate questions in my eyes and some of you may be chuckling now because you have 'the ledge' too and don't know what to do with it. You don't want to know what I have on my ledge but I'll embarrass myself and show you (don't judge now LoL)

Wall color - Stone Brown by Behr

I know. I know. Those darn kids of mine are always horsing around. Apparently they thought this was funny … well it is in a bizarre way. It's pathetic but if you can come up with a better idea for me, please let me know. (ps -burning the ledge doesn't count)

Amber • The Color Palette of Fall featuring BEHR

When I think of fall, certain colors come to mind
such as yellow, gold, orange and browns.
Caramelized Orange • Squash

When I think of Amber, I think of fall. Look at the colors in these two pieces of amber. Does that not remind you of Autumn?

Talk about an inspiration piece that will literally provide the color scheme for your entire home! What comes to mind when I see these colors? Here is how my mind would take these colors and incorporate them into your home.

COLOR:

A - CAlM AIR - This color would definitely be the foyer, hallway and laundry room color.

B - BANANA SPLIT - Yellows make a great choice for children's room and playrooms.

C - Gold - my favorite hue! You can see it here pictured in my own living room as an accent color. Try GOLD BUFF, SAHARA SHADE  or LIGHT COPPER if you like this look.

LIGHT COPPER by Behr
D - ICED TEA - This is an amazing, amazing color. I've used it in my clients homes before so I've seen first hand how beautiful this color completes a room. Again, another one of my personal favs of color. This would look beautiful in a dining room, a 'man cave' bonus room or a media room.

E -CHESTNUT STALLION - As we get into the darker colors, I like to use these as accents to accentuate architectural features in a home. Tray ceilings or one wall in a bedroom are great choices for darker colors.

F -BURNISHED MAHOGANY - Still using the very dark colors as accents, this color I would use on columns. Here it's pictured on the six columns in the entryway of my home with a touch of hand painted gilding for a splash of interest.

G - This color may be too dark for any room in your home but it would make an outstanding color for your front door. Try EMBARCADERO which is a notable combination of rich red and chocolate brown.

The Many Colors of Frank Lloyd Wright

Church of the Holy Cross

VOICE OF COLOR
Burgundy Wine • Sheer Cliff • Covered Wagon

I had the pleasure of visiting Arizona in 2006 and one of my stops was Sedona, AZ. Not only was I blown away from the amazing color of the landscape there but was also intrigued in knowing that there was a presence of Frank Lloyd Wright in Sedona in the middle of no where. Luckily, I lived only one hour away from Fallingwaters in the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvaina and was able to see his influence in my home state.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross was built by a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Her name was Marguerite Brunswig Staude. Frank Lloyd Wright is most famously known for his home in Pennsylvania, Fallingwater but did you also know that he has another home in Arizona?

TALIESIN WEST
VOICE OF COLOR
Gold Buff • Holland Tile • Shaker Peg

He is most famous for his daring design of the cantilever that can be seen as the protruding ledges in his home. Wrights designs continue to influence design today and can be seen in just about everywhere you look from bridges, towers, building, chairs and decks.

Cantilever Chair

What colors does Frank Lloyd Wright have in his home? As a genius in design, F.L.W believed buildings should grow naturally from it's environment would only stand to reason that the colors of his home are inspired by nature.

VOICE OF COLOR
Rum Rasin • Mayan Treasure • Jute

Autumn leaves, stones, trees or the flora of the Laurel Mountains can very easily be the inspiration of this color palette.

Would you like a Frank Lloyd Wright color scheme for your home? Try any of these absolutely, amazing colors from PPG. Porter Paints with the names I've listed here, and you'll be on your way to having a famous color scheme in your home.

How to get the RIGHT Color for Your Home

It's easy as A, B, C … and maybe D. I'll show you how.
Choosing color for your home can be a challenge.
Here I can show you where to place color and also give you some color suggestions.

When I design a color palette for my clients, I refer to the interior as a 'tree'. The foyer is the trunk which is the core of the home and the rooms are the 'branches'. This is like a  'color map' which helps my clients visualize the layout of their home instead of being so overwhelmed with color placement.

The foyer is usually a neutral color such as the one you see (A) above. Most of the foyers here in the south Charlotte area are very open and continue up to the second floor. Keeping that in mind, a light, neutral color seems to work best.
In most cases, the dining room is to the left or right side of the foyer. I find that many of my clients ask for a red dining room so we'll choose that hue for this area. Red is actually a great choice since red and the neutral go so well together and also makes a striking statement when you enter the home.

COLOR CAUTION: Red has been known to increase your appetite. Think of all the restaurants you've been to that just happen to be red. Are they subliminally making you eat more? You may never know!
Working with red is also difficult. You'll definitely need a gray tinted primer (I know that sounds odd to have a gray primer but trust me on this one) to reduce the amount of coats you'll need. You can count on 2 possibly 3 coats of paint when working with reds.

Now based on this open floor plan, the Living room is going to be surrounded by the kitchen, foyer and dining room. Knowing that, the color you choose for this room has to coordinate with those surrounding rooms.

Here is another shot of the Living room. Notice how you can see other rooms from standing in this one spot. Take that into consideration when choosing color. You also have to know where to start and stop the color. You can see here how I labeled the walls for  placement. This green will look great beside the neutral foyer and of course we all know that red and green look great together but they have to be the RIGHT red and green. Let's move to the kitchen. I think I see a nice warm gold for that room.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a color for your kitchen. Keep in mind the undertones of your flooring and cabinets. Do you want them to have the same undertone or to have more contrast? Let's say we are staying with the warm undertones therefore going with this this gold hue.

Caution: Be careful here; your kitchen color has to coordinate with your living room color since these rooms flow into each other. Like the way the green and gold look together? Ok, let's recap.
  • Do you like this palette?
  • Do the colors flow from room to room?
  • Is there enough color?
  • Is there too much hue for you?

The only other color that I add at this point is a light color for the upstairs hallway. I like to choose a creamy, light hue because most, if not all hallways that I've seen lack light. To compensate for this, the off white not only lightens the halls but gives a great contrast to the color that were just chosen.

There you have it - a basic color placement map for you to use when choosing a sensational color scheme for your home. If you have a home that has more rooms or nooks and crannies that are color confusing to you, contact me and we can set up a color consultation and I'd love to help you out.
