The Scarlet Letter
The Love/Hate Relationship with Red
The scarlet letter as we know it is novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It’s considered to be his masterpiece and most famous work. It tells a story of a woman in the 17th century who commits adultery. She then wears “a rag of scarlet cloth” on the breast of her gown with a scarlet letter “A” sewn on it to let all who see her know she’s committed adultery.
It’s interesting the letter “A” was chosen to be red. This very symbolic color represents so much from the obvious love, poison and passion to be a color of luck, life and fortune for various cultures. How does one color have so much power?
Red is also an intriguing color choice for many people. We would love to use it in our home but we’d hate to make the wrong choice. Ah yes, our scarlet red. The color we love to hate.
Red. Our guilty pleasure of color choice. Oh you color of power! How do we select the right red? With so many choices, shades, tones, tints, hues - what? See what I mean? For some, the confusion has already started.
Go where no other has dared to tread. You want this very powerful color for a room in your home. Your desire to have this very symbolic color but you are worried what other people will think. Will my family like it? Will red be too much color for my small room? Will it make my room look like the secret red room in the basement of the Amityville Horror? How do I choose the right red?????
Ok, all rhetorical excursions set aside, how do you pick the right red? The approach to selecting the right red for your home can be daunting but I’m here to make it a little easier for you. Whew right?
We already know that you would like red in a room for your home. Have you decided on which room? Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or dining room? For the most part, I’ve seen this scarlet beauty mostly in dining rooms. The rumor mill has it that red will increase your appetite so I guess the dining room would be the appropriate choice. Don’t have dining room? Red might be a bit much to see first thing in the morning before your cup of coffee so I don’t think that I myself would have a red kitchen. Now red in the bedroom would be the second choice where this full bodied color would look great. It’s romantic, hot, exciting, lively and full of passion. All excellent adjectives one would expect to find in the bedroom - for color choice for course!
I am going to list for you the names of the best reds that I’ve chosen for my clients over the years. This will at least get you started in the right direction. Here we go and in no particular order or preference:
By Valspar
Cabin Red **
Tomato **
Paradise Red
Cranberry
Crimson
Hawthorn
Bordeaux
Berry Cobbler
Flame
Flag
Behr
Red Tomato**
Cherry Wine
Frosted Pomegranate
Poinsettia
Daredevil
Cherry Cobbler
California Poppy
Ruby Ring
** popular choices
Now these are all great reds. Without getting too technical, the undertones of these reds are all very different. Some have blue undertones which make the red appear to look more purple and some have a yellow undertone which make it look closer to orange. Here is what I mean.
The red on the left has a blue or cool undertone and the red on the right has a yellow or warmer undertone.
I can tell you this. If you want a true or primary red for a child’s room, you’d want to go with the warmer reds. In that case, I can suggest Valspar’s Tomato and Behr’s Red Tomato. For an accent wall the popular choice has been Cabin Red and Crimson by Valspar. I’ve chosen these hues time and time again. In my option, these are some of the best reds I’ve come across. There are so many to choose from and it’s like splitting hairs but hands down, these are the most used in my book of clients. It’s a start at least.
Without giving you red overload, at this point I would go to Lowe’s and pick the Valspar chips of all the reds I listed here. Do the same at Home Depot for the Behr colors. Take these chips home and hang them a wall in the room of your choice. Remember this though, as the light changes in your room throughout the day, these color chips will also look different. For instance, Cabin Red will look redder in bright sunlight but as the sun sets, this colors will suddenly changes to a fairly dark hue. Keep these colors up for a few days and in different light situations.
TIP: In the case of red, looking at and deciding on a color by staring at little paint chips is difficult. I would highly recommend using color test boards. Here you can paint a large sample, up to 24” x 12” or as small as 6” x 6”. It’s so much easier to choose any color this way once you have it narrowed down to your favorite one or two colors.
As if all this is not challenging enough, now comes for the most vital part of painting a room red - PRIMING. This is an absolute must! There is to yin with yang. No cookies without milk. No peanut butter without jelly. You get the gist - primer and paint just go hand in hand. You cannot skip this step.
To make this step very simple, in a nutshell, use a gray primer. That’s what I said! Use a medium tone gray primer when painting your wall red. If you don’t use a gray tinted primer, you will definitely be applying up to 4 coats of paint to get the true red. This paint tip - PRICELESS!
Or a just little red,
Choose the red you love, in the room you love and don’t be afraid to love the red you choose!

Hue Blue it!
What to do in case you chose the wrong color
Blue is favored by both men and women but it seems men have a stronger preference towards it than women do. Having said that, it would be a natural assumption to choose blue for his bedroom. You've selected a blue that appeals to you and one you think he’d like as well. With paint can in hand you head home and start painting. As the day progresses you’ve moved the heavy bedroom set, took everything off the walls, repaired all holes in the wall, outlined the room in painters tape and painted away to your hearts content. You’re done! Now you step back and look at the room but something looks very wrong. You blew it or should I say “blue” it.
Like this color? Try Caribbean Coast • Benjamin Moore
So what happened? From the variance in lighting to the incorrect undertone and perhaps from just too many colors to choose from, the wrong hue was selected. Unfortunately, there are only two choices to rectify this painting fiasco. One is to hope he just loves the color and leave it alone and the second choice would be to select a different color. Here are some other hues that could be a consideration for him. See the difference?
Like these colors?
Try Respite • Stream • Oceanside • Sherwin Williams
Color Tip: Crisp, clean and vibrant hues such as Caribbean Coast generally make a great choice for a child’s room. They are more playful colors and are well suited for nurseries, playrooms and for the most part, ideal for a youthful look.
Muted or darker hues may be more palatable to an adult as their bedroom choice. These colors have a tendency to be a bit more soothing and refined and also compliment most decor choice’s.
Many of us reading this post already learned this lesson through our design careers whether it was during our schooling or throughout our field experience. Some others may have learned this the hard way, through trial and error. The point is to understand color and to learn about it. By reading posts such as the one, you can be an expert in no time! With different learning levels from advanced to accommodate our Interior Designers to our everyday readers who are the “DIYers” and want to learn as much as they can. It’s all here for you at your fingertips!
Here are another scenario you can learn from.
Too Much Hue?
Purple Surf
Olympic
OK, so you really, really, really love purple. You bought the purple bedding, purple paint, pillows, throw blankets, window treatments and even have purple flowers to match. Suddenly purple doesn’t seem so appealing. Loving a color is great but like everything else in life, love it in moderation. If a monochromatic color scheme is what you were trying to achieve, than your fine. Choosing the same color for your room because you don’t know what else to choose, not a good thing. Now you have to choose another color to match this very purple room. What are your options? You have a few, here they are:
It’s Split Complimentary color - green
It’s Complimentary color - yellow
It’s Analogous color - red
It's Tetrad color - peach
They all look great with purple! So you see, there really is no such thing as a mistake in the design world. A good designer or DIYer always has plan B incase plan A doesn’t turn out the way you wanted it to. It’s not that plan A was wrong, it’s just that plan B may be better. The main thing is to learn by your mistakes. The more "mistakes" you make, the more you've leaned.

Sherwin Williams Does it Again for 2011
Whole Wheat • Sand Dune • Breaktime • Chartreuse
GENTLY MEDELY
fresh, airy, innocent
Can't you just see these gorgeous colors in your home?
Sherwin Williams does it again with their Color Forecast for 2011.
Like their colors weren't amazing enough, they have these upcoming trends that will sure to be a hit.
How will these colors look in your home?
Although this bedroom is shown in another one of my favorite colors, Rainwashed, the “Gently Medley” trend seems to continue with the unrestrained and oh so subtle feel of innocent hues that only nature can provide.
Tapping into the softness of youth yet strong enough to make a statement the color palette of Gently Medely is yet another thumbs up in my book of colors!
A Call from HGTV?
I'm going about my blogging, designing and colorful day and the phone rings. I check the caller I.D and it's a generic “Comcast” name. Comcast? Ok, I'll answer it.
Hi Donna, this is C**** from HGTV Bang for your Buck. We are filming in Charlotte in August and would like to know . . . . ”.
It sounded like a segment from the old Charlie Brown cartoons, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I really couldn't hear much after I heard HGTV. My mind just went blank from excitement!
As the call progressed I got my act together and actually tried to comprehend what C**** had to day. To make sure, I asked it she could please send me an email with details and I'll see if could accommodate her. So here is the email she sent.
Hi Donna,
Thanks for taking the time to speak with me a moment ago. Let me reiterate what we spoke about and give you details below.
I am casting for Season 5 of HGTV's Bang For Your Buck (see episodes here: www.hgtv.com/bang). We plan to film in Charlotte, NC, August 9th-12th. We are looking for three recent (completed within the last 2-3 years) Master Suite renovations or additions with a total cost between $60K-70K to feature on our show. The Master Suite can be a part of a larger renovation. Since our show is very homeowner-centric, we are looking for young, fun, enthusiastic, and diverse homeowners to walk us through their space on camera.
TV moves quickly,(moves quickly? I can't even plan a turkey dinner in two days) so I apologize in advance for the tight deadline. Hopefully we can work something out. If so, here is a quick rundown of the casting process:
1) Please contact the homeowner to be sure they are interested and available to be appear on camera the week of August 9th-12th.
2) Email me multiple before and after photos of the renovation, along with the final cost of the project. If you have large files, feel free to use the free file-sharing site instead of sending multiple emails to accommodate the large files, but please follow up with an email to be sure I receive the filemail link.
3) Attached you will find the homeowner application and cost breakdown sheet. Please have the homeowners fill out the application and cost sheet and email it back to me, along with the extra photos requested at the bottom of the application.
4) Feel free to have homeowners send application materials as they are completed to keep the ball rolling, as opposed to waiting until everything is finished to send all at once. Also feel free to have your clients contact me directly with questions or to submit materials.
5) If these projects meet all the casting criteria and falls within the narrowed price point, I will set up a phone interview with the homeowners. Let's focus on the first four points, though, and cross this bridge when it presents itself. :)
I need to have this entire casting process wrapped up by this Friday,(note: that was in two days from when I received this email) so I would need all applications and photos by Thursday. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you!
Well the search for willing clients in an extreme short notice (2 days) proved to be a bit challenging. Some clients were camera shy, on vacation or didn't want the financial commitment to tweak their room to look fabulous. But you have a chance to be on HGTV!!
That's ok, I'm a true believer that if it's meant to be, it will be. So to try to make the best of this opportunity, I proposed my Color Recipes to HGTV in hopes that they will be able to use the idea in an article on their website or in some other fabulous way.
Thanks to all my Facebook friends for your kind comments and support and to HGTV for the chance, however small it was, to be on your show. Good luck to HGTV when you film here in Charlotte in August!!
Hey, not for nothing but it's great just to be nominated!!

Pretty as a Pin Up
Caramel Ice • Two to Tango • Blue Danube
Olympic
Sometimes what's old is new again. Whether it's clothes, style, fashion, or color schemes, what was once considered old fashioned now becomes the "new".
You'll see some swimsuits that have the look from the 1940's.
From the glitz and glamour of Lauren Becall to Rita Hayworth. I don't think the hair styles will make a come back anytime soon or the shoulder pads (it really didn't work in the 80's) but certainly some of the clothing trends can be spotted in stores.
What about for your home? Like the look? How can you incorporate this retro look of the 1040's into your home? Think back to some of the colors your grandparents had in their home. Do you remember seeing any of these colors?
Your paint scheme would be very close to this palette.

Customize your home color scheme with a 40's flair.
Grab the retro colors but modernize the decor.
Here's what you can do.

You may not want to paint your room completely red but you can certainly have red as an accent color for any of these rooms. Make your home pretty as a pin up!

Amber • A very warm color scheme
Coming from the Baltic Sea, Amber is very soft, comes in an amazing array of warm hues from pale opaque yellow to a rich honey color with specs of dark brown. If you love amber like I do, you'll love the colors you can take from this Baltic treasure and bring it into your home.
The amber ring in the center is more typical of a good piece of jewelry and if it has a bug in it then BINGO - you hit the jackpot. In this media room, you'll see how cozy decorating with golds and browns can be.
Another great example of how you can use even jewelry, as an inspiration to decorate your home. Here are some colors by Behr if you want to get the look of amber in your home.
Status Bronze • Sweet Maple • Chocolate Color

Dutch Boy, I have a scheme for you!
Like this cottage?
Try Brick Fleck and Sheet Metal
from Dutch Boy
I would like to thank the kind folks at Dutch Boy for sending me some paint fan decks. I apologize for taking so long to get this blog out.
After viewing the paint fan deck I must admit the colors are a lot brighter then the palettes I usually use. They are crisp, clean and vibrant. I love them! They are “feel good” colors.
Look at these vibrant colors taken from the inspiration for a kids bathroom. How many kids would love these colors in their bathroom?

And I have to show you this red in their dining room inspiration - Tomato Bisque and White. It's hard to find a great red in any palette and I really like this one and it looks classic with the white. Can you just see the black accent color that should be in this room? Go on the Dutch Boy site and look around. You'll love these colors! They have neat paint containers that you can twist and just pour - go see!
Again, like I said on the blog of Sensational Color for your Home, find an inspirational picture like the cottage home I have here and look at the paint chips. You may not find an exact color but you'll come close.

Sherwin Williams • a Good Coastal Run
Tradewinde and Doeskin
Photos by Maya
Over the last two months, there has been a huge Coastal flair here in Charlotte. As my color consultations progressed, it was one coastal theme after the other. It's not because I like the calming colors of beach glass and but it's what my clients are asking for.
Waterscape and Trusty Tan
Thanks to Maya of Daily Vitamin Sea, my blogs posts are more beautiful then ever! I love the way she captures the coastal charm in her photography. The closeups, the color and the inspiration of the coast, thank you Maya!
Without the amazing color palette of Sherwin Williams, most of my color consultations would not be possible. I can choose any paint brand that will fit into the color scheme of my clients but they are asking for Sherwin Williams. Great quality paint and the colors are just the best. They have brights, lights, darks, neutrals, muted neutrals and every tone, tint and shade in between. Did I cover it all?
So if you are thinking about a new, crisp, clean color scheme for your home. Feast your eyes on some of these colors.
So if you are thinking about a new, crisp, clean color scheme for your home. Feast your eyes on some of these colors.
Meander Blue and Escape Gray
Coastal Plain and Realist Beige
The colors of the coast are particularly beautiful when you have a large home with an open floor plan. This type of house is what I specialize in choosing colors for and makes up a large percent of the south Charlotte area. The way these soft, muted colors flow endless from one room to another is amazing. The best thing about these coastal colors is that most of your decor will match with this new color scheme. For the most part, they are neutrals, complex neutrals with a touch of color for interest.
Some coastal colors do have more of a punch of color but still hold the beautiful, relaxing color palette that Mother Nature provided for us.

Saying ❝ I Do ❞ To Color
Since the wedding season is upon us, my natural thought progression went to color. I was wondering, if I were to plan a wedding again, would I choose the same colors?
The dresses, styles and colors were so different 20 years ago when I got married to what is available now. It’s seems the styles are more streamline and modern. How many of you still have half a dozen of those brides maids dresses in your closet that you’ll never wear again? Look at this beautiful dress and the color is amazing! I certainly would wear this dress again and again and again.
Back in 1990, I went with black and white. It’s a timeless color combination and just about everyone looks good in these colors unlike the tutti frutti colors of some brides maids dresses back in the day.
Oddly enough, the only thing I would change would be the color of my dress. I’m really not a fan of white. I guess I protest it because there are so many gorgeous colors to choose from, why use white? I know white has it’s time and place, which is a whole other story but as far as weddings, I think I’d change it up a bit.
What’s this? A little splash of red on her stocking? How fun is that! I would definitely add an accent color on my dress somewhere. Look how beautiful this is!
I would even add some great color to my accessories but my flowers would remain white.
So to answer my own question, would I keep my wedding colors the same? Other then just adding an accent color to my dress, yes, I would keep it the same. How about you? Would you go for the latest color trends, stick with the classics or do it all over again and not change a thing?
