Trending Colors • It's All in a Name

Wouldn't it be cool if we bought paint colors based on the name alone?  I'll have a gallon of “Laughing Orange” and a quart of “Cheerful”. It's seems that the color trends this year are taking a precise direction towards crisp clean colors. Feel good colors with names to match!

Year of the Tiger

Oh yes, the tiger print! The beautiful colors and the majestic animal make for a great combination, a great color combination that is.

The gold, cinnamon, black and brown coloring of the tiger are great universal colors. Gold is a very, very, popular color, goes with most decor and is just a “feel good” color. When all other options are not working for you, look into the many shades of gold. Here are a few golds and spicy colors I've used in past color consultations that may interest you:

Fall Leaf
La Fonda Spice

Front door impressions

What is it they say, you have only one chance to make a first impression? Well, the same goes for your house. Your front door in the first thing people see as they enter your home, make a good impression!

I recently painted my door Antique Burgundy by Valspar and it made a huge difference in itself, adding a holiday themed decoration only makes it better!

Dakota Trail by Valspar, a color you can count on

I can’t say enough about this color. It’s subtle, yet it makes a statement. It’s green yet is beige at times, maybe tan - it’s a very versatile color. I think the reason this color is so popular is that it’s seen in so many fabrics from drapery, area rugs, furniture and artwork. It compliments many ceramic tiles and grout colors found on most mantles and harmonizes well with just about every hardwood flooring. It’s truly a great, universal, very popular color choice - especially when the choice is difficult… you can count on Dakota Trail by Valspar.

Color is like a box of chocolates …

You never know what your gonna get!

Your “box of chocolate” can look like this:

How do you know when the color is right?

Tough question but is there an easy answer? When your shopping for clothes or shoes, you can try them on to see how they look and feel. When you need a car, you can test drive it but how do you "test drive" colors for your home?

Many people go out and buy color samples from their local box store

I've been in homes and have seen up to 8 shades of green patches on the wall. How do you choose which little color swatch will be “the one”? This is not always an easy feat although it helps many people. If you paint the sample large enough, let's say a 3' x 3' patch and remove all other distracting accessories away, you can view this sample morning, noon and night and see it's true color through out the day. I would really try to limit your choices to 3 at the most. Sometimes when we have too many choices, it gets too overwhelming. It's like choosing a pair of jeans - do we want high rise, low rise, loose fit, classic fit - you get the picture.

Ultimately, if you are in dire need of color help, call in the pros. Call an expert to help you with your decision. A Color Specialist will “test drive” the color for you and when you see it in your home, you'll know it's the right color for you!

Through the eye of a Color Specialist

We all look at the same objects but we all see different things. For example, an eye is an eye but looking through the eye of a Color Specialist, it now becomes a color scheme. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Color Gone Wrong

So you’ve decided to choose colors for your home.  You like color, you know what colors you have in mind for each room but somehow the final result looks like … a patchwork quilt. Each room has a different color and nothing matches!! Don’t feel bad, this is a common dilemma. You can choose a different color for each room but all the colors have to somehow be related to each other. Call me - I’ll make sure your “quilt” matches!

No Fuss Curtains

Spring will be here before you know it. If you are looking for a light and airy look for your windows try sheers. Many people think they are old fashioned but sheers have really come a long way since Grandma had them. The sheers here are from Domestications (I've been ordering from them for years) and they are called “Crushed Voile Panels”. What's so great about these sheers? You don't have to iron them!! That's really big in my book since I don't iron. They have a perpetual crinkle on the fabric and you literally take them out of your washing machine (delicate/cold) and put them on the rod and they will dry on the window within 20 minutes. It doesn't get any easier then this ladies! They come in great colors to. I have the brown (shown) eggshell and taupe. One more tip … use eggshell sheers for combined with a one colored panels on the sides - great look!

Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who has the prettiest house of all?

We’d all love our homes to look like a page in Southern Living Magazine but how do we go about doing it?

Like anything else, decorating can be simple or very complex. It can be inexpensive or can run into the thousands’. With a few minor changes, you can turn a room from ordinary to extraordinary with very little effort.

The easiest and fastest way to change the look of a room is to change the color. Have some color schemes in mind before starting this project. Look through some home decorating magazines like Metropolitan Home, House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens or Town and Country. Again, you can keep the cost down by going to your local library and reading the selection of magazines they have. Most libraries have a large selection to choose from.

A new way to look at ceilings.  Many people just paint the ceilings white because they think that is the way it should be. Well why not paint it an ivory or a warm beige color? You might even be more daring and try a pastel color like a pale blue or a light sage green. Just remember, if you have a low ceiling, putting a color other then white on it will make it appear lower. If you have a high ceiling - this would be a great option for you to try.

Update your living room with a muted soft blue for your wall and light grey ceiling. Your family will enjoy the sophistication the moment they walk into the room. Rich, dark woods like cherry or mahogany add contrast to this room. Luxurious fabrics with silver, grey and creams are very inviting for this room. So few changes and already a room is transforming!

Congratulations! You just took the first step to redecoration your home.  Color is a great way to express yourself and to instantly change the look of a room. The most important thing to remember is have fun and open up your imagination. It’s just paint and accessories. If you don’t like the way a room turned out, you can always change it. Have confidence in yourself and enjoy!

The 7 Dwarfs of Decorating

Happy - This is usually the first step of decorating. Everyone is always happy and eager to start a home decorating project. Maybe a party is coming up and you want the house to look just right. You want to impress all your family and friends with how good your house looks - or will look. Happy, Happy, Happy.

Dopey -  Where do I start? What color paint do I use? How do I measure for window treatments? How much wallpaper do I need? Do I want carpeting or wood floors? Having a ton of questions will make you feel - well, dopey. You don’t know what you need to buy to get the look you want. Very frustrating. Who will help you with all these decisions?

Grumpy - Oh yea, this is a good one. Now you’re getting mad because you feel frustrated. So much to do, so little time and money. You’re probably saying “how hard can it be to make my house look nice”? Guess what? It’s a little more difficult then one thinks it is.

Bashful - Now this one we can all relate to. I can do this. I will go ahead and order my own window treatments. I can pick out my own colors. I know how much wallpaper to use - I think.

Well guess what? You didn’t order your window treatments properly because you didn’t measure the correct way. You thought, how hard can it be to measure a window. Now your stuck with custom order blinds that don’t fit, look right and can’t be returned.

You picked out your own paint colors without a second thought. Somehow that yellow you picked out just doesn’t look right in your dining room. Yellow? Did you mean to pick out a gold? Gold is yellow isn’t it? It’s in the yellow family but you need to pick the right shade of “yellow”.

You just finished wallpapering your living room and you don’t have enough paper. Now you have to order more and guess what? The dye lots aren’t going to match. And now that you think about it, the big pink flowers on the wallpaper looks a bit odd in the living room.

Thought you could do it on your own, with no guidance or research about decorating and color. Feeling a bit embarrassed with the decisions you made? We’ve all been there before. With the ‘I can do it myself’ attitude all we do is make wrong and costly mistakes.

Doc - Headache? Stomach ache? Upset stomach? Mad you made some wrong decisions? What’s done is done. Don’t get yourself sick over something that should be fun and exciting. You’re decorating not getting a root canal.

Luckily there are blogs such as this one to help you with decorating decisions. You will benefit from the experience I have and from the mistakes I made.

Sneezy - Believe it or not, there are products that you can use for your home or office that are hypo-allergenic. Certain types of flooring are better then others. For example, you might want to consider ceramic tile in your house if you have allergies. Carpet seems to collect all kinds of allergens from dust mites to animal dander.

There are even some carpet pads you can get that help prevent mold spore and allergens if you absolutely have to have carpet.

Sleepy -  Whew! There certainly is a lot to take in about decorating. It’s an exhausting process if you don’t go in the right direction.

I like to make my decorating decisions in the morning (only because I’m a morning person) when I’m most refreshed. Don’t t make major decisions when you are tired or not feeling well. Always start on a good day. Good day - good decisions. Have fun!

Inside the Mind of a Color Specialist (Interview)

If you are intimidated by paint color, Donna Frasca has a recipe for success for you - a Color Recipe©, that is.

You see, Donna is completely not afraid of color - she "cooks it up" instead, which is a great example of her creative personality.

So if nothing else, Donna will teach you how to have fun with decorating and coloring your home!

Donna, what led you to pursue a career in interior design?
I've been very lucky in my careers. All the jobs I've ever had were in the decorating or design field. I have experience and knowledge in just about every aspect from walls to floors and everything in between.

I've worked for many design firms but always had my own business on the side. I don't think there is any aspect of decorating and design that I haven't done. Owning my own business was the natural progression for my career path. I'm a one stop decorating service that specializes in color.

What part of your work do you love the most?
I get excited when I choose colors for a home. People invite me into their personal space and trust me to choose colors that they would like for their home. That's a lot of trust that someone puts in you. I'm glad I can make a difference in their life by choosing amazing colors for them.

What is the biggest difference in how YOU see color, and how homeowners see it?
I see color in detail. I can see how much blue a green has or if a red is too yellow. Clients see blue, and red. This is how I can choose the right blue for them or the right shade of red for their décor. When there are 1,000 shades of blue to choose, this skill comes in handy!

What is your signature decorating style?
I don't really have a style. I have to be open to all styles so I can accommodate what other people want. I have to get into their heads and view their home to decide what style will best suit them. I think if I had a particular style I would probably have a tendency to use it over and over again in my clients homes. This way, I have an open mind to what better suits them.

What advice can you give to those who want to discover their own signature styles?
Have fun with it! Look through magazines and cut out the pages you like. You can mix and match elements from each page and create your own style.

What's different about painting and decorating open floor homes (your specialty)?
Open floor plans can be a challenge to paint and decorate. I’ve heard clients say that they don’t know where to start a color or where it should end. They’re not sure which wall would make a good accent color or even if the room calls for an accent feature.

Rooms have to have a flow. When you stand in one part of the home and are able to see 5 rooms at once, you need to have all those rooms relate somehow in color and theme.

You should see me at a consult – I have my paint deck open and I mark off the top of the page with a tag. By the end of the consult, the paint deck is all fanned out and has up to 15 tags on top. I have to refer to those tags throughout the consult to make sure the color scheme has a flow. I wish I had an extra set of hands... an Assistant maybe?

How do you know when a color combination works?
My body tells me: I get goose bumps on my arms. When I get the goose bumps, I know it’s right!

I don’t tweak colors once they are picked. When I enter a client’s home, I usually have a color scheme mapped out in my head within the first 10 minutes or so, once in a while there might be a toss up between two colors but that’s rare.

What is your process for specifying paint colors?
The 1st step to choosing a color scheme is of course listening to the client. I ask what style or color they like but I can usually tell by the way they decorate their home. In most cases the clients don't have any color on their wall yet so it makes it easy to come up with a scheme.

I then look around the room for a color inspiration piece or something the client really likes in that room. Inspiration pieces that I’ve worked with so far range from vases, pillows, lamps, artwork, area rugs, and drapery. I once came up with an amazing color scheme from a tapestry a client had. It was beautiful!

Having several paint decks to work with, I then decide which deck has the colors that will suit the client’s colors scheme. Then the process starts.

What advice can you give to move homeowners just a step closer to finding the right paint color for their homes?
You can again refer to a color scheme that you like in a magazine and try to match up some colors from there but it can be tricky.

If you don’t have the time or confidence, call a Color Specialist! I’ve seen so many clients waste their time and money picking colors and getting frustrated with their choices. I know they have a color in mind but it’s sometimes difficult for them to choose the right shade. Also, sometimes they get so nervous about their choices they play it safe and just paint with white or off white.

Tell us about the Color Recipes© on your website! How did you come up with the idea, and does it have practical application?

My Color Recipes© are so much fun! Did this ever happen to you? You go to a restaurant, order your meal, lets say turkey with all the sides, then a few minutes later your meal comes out and it looks beautiful on the plate? It’s arranged just right, the colors are, well, good enough to eat and sometimes the plate has a decoration or two on it like a slice of orange or some decorative kale?

Many of our meals make for a great color scheme. For instance, the cranberry sauce is a great shade of red, the green beans are a rich green and the turkey has various shades of brown and tans. It makes a great color scheme for a living room.

The red would make a great accent color by the fireplace and I would combine the green and neutral tans for the rest of walls. This is a great way to start a color scheme for your room.

Just pull any picture from a magazine, pick up any piece of art in your home, look at the colors of an area rug you like. The color schemes are already chosen for you! I just like the colors found in food so I have a ton of recipe books that I refer to! I always say if it looks good on your plate it’ll look great on your walls!

What is your biggest pet peeve in the current painting or decorating trends?
The only thing that urks me is when a color scheme or design is beat to death or just saturated in the market so much that every other home you walk into has the same color scheme.

A good example? Brown/blue and brown/green combos. Although these are beautiful combos, they are old and tired already. If you really like these colors, just put your own spin on it. Try brown and salmon or blue and gray. Have fun with color!

What is your home color and design forecast for the next 2 yrs?
No one really knows what will happen in the next 2 yrs – experienced guessing at best. It was 2007 when I had a color forecast clear out of the blue. I said that purple will become a hit. This came to me when I was hanging some curtains in my new home and the fabric had a grape vine in it. I took one look at the beautiful shade of plum and said that was going to be the next trend – and it was and still is. Again, lucky guess.

My design forecast is this. With the economy the way it is, people will have a limited amount of money to spend on decorating. They will be putting the emphasis on wall color instead of their accessories.

What are your career goals and plans for the next 5 yrs?
I like to keep it simple. I still would like to choose color schemes for the homes and business’s here in Charlotte, NC. Once you find a niche, it’s good to stick with it.

What is your secret to success as a decorator?
Experience, talent, drive and a love for what you are doing. The designers coming out of college are book smart but to have over 15 yrs experience, what do they say, is priceless and it shows. Good designers don’t happen overnight. They learn throughout a lifetime.

What are the 3 things nobody knows about you?
I can’t say, otherwise they would know (giggle)! Really though, there are no big secrets.

Are Custom Draperies a Luxury of the Past?

Yards of fabric, yards of liner, drapery hardware, workroom charges, valances, tie backs, fringe yardage, installation charges, labor and shipping  - the common words of the custom drapery world.

Custom drapery is so beautiful but usually is quite expensive. There is nothing like the feel of a silk, lined panel – so thick, yet soft, lustrous, smooth and elegant. But OMG can it put a damper on your wallet!

I had a client in South Charlotte that had the money to spend. She lived in a beautiful mansion and didn’t lack for anything. Marble was everywhere. Gold was everywhere. The house and grounds were something out of “Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous”. This client wanted custom drapery for her baby girl’s nursery. She choose the best silk, hand knotted fabric for the valance, the best hardware to match the furniture the most elegant fringe and a coordinating shower curtain for the bathroom at $345 a yard. I color co-coordinated the bedding in the crib (one of those round cribs mind you) with the custom upholstered furniture. Even the paint was a custom color to match the bedding in the crib. The color scheme of the room was a soft, Victorian pink with chocolate brown accents – it was the most beautiful drapery I’ve ever designed and it was huge! It was the entire with of the room, which included two windows and a French door.

Well $10,000 later and many hours invested I heard the dreaded words from my clients mouth; “I think I’ll go to Pottery Barn”. Potty Barn?? Are you kidding me? How did we go from high-end silk fabric to off the rack store bought panels? I wish I had just a nickel for every time I heard a client say that. This client could have hands down bought drapery 3x’s as expensive but sometimes the sticker shock just sends them to Pottery Barn.

So getting back to custom drapery, yes it’s beautiful. Yes it’s expensive and yes I get so mad at Pottery Barn!! Are Pottery Barn’s sales up? Probably, they do have nice things but it’s kinda funny how some people want the best of the best but when they see how much “the best” is, they are suddenly very happy with “second best”.

Brace For Impact • The Colors of Courage

As our blogs become visual diaries, I would like to make a small post on the now famous flight of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport  landing into the Hudson.

A year later, we celebrate the impact of a miracle. This story hit a little close to home. I didn't know anyone on the flight but my husband is a Supervisor for U.S. Airways so it had a definite effect on us too.

The colors of Bug Art

This is just too much fun… I can go on and on. See how easy it is to choose a color scheme from anywhere? So take your inspiration piece - a shirt, tie, scarf, photograph, fruit anything at all and go to your favorite paint store. Look at the color samples on the wall and choose just 2 or 3 colors from your inspiration piece. Keep picking a sample until it matches your IP exactly or very close to it. Take those samples home and see how they look in your home before you purchase the paint.

☛ ☛ ☛ DESIGN TIP
Try holding the paint chip vertically when you are at the store. The light will reflect on it differently from when you hold the chip out horizontally. It'll make a HUGE difference.

The color of SALT

Does anyone have these salt lamps? If not, I highly recommend you get one. I did a post a while a go on the one I have but I came across these colorful ones. All you have to do is change the bulb inside and you can have whatever color lamp you need to match your decor. Not only do these salt lamps have healthy benefits but now you can get them in any color!

Look at FABRIC for color schemes

You can turn towards fabrics in search for new and unique color schemes.
Looking for something different?
Glance at silk scarves.
Many of their color schemes originate from other countries.
