Getting into the mind of a teenager - with color

Any parent knows that when it comes to the “teenage room” scary things can happen. What does the typical teenage room like like? Good chances you'll see posters on the walls, clothes on the floor, strange things on the dresser and there's a really good chance you'll see black walls or ceiling. Well, a teenagers room doesn't have to be black anymore.

Spiced Wine • Caramel Sundae • Dark Granite by Voice of Color, Porter Paints

We want our kids be have individualism and paint their room the color of their choice. For some reason they lean towards black. You have to get into the mind of a teenager when approaching this touchy subject of what color to paint their room. How cool would it be for the teenager who's the young artist to have a “Rembrandt” color scheme? After the room is painted the inspiration piece should be hung to complete the look and tie in the scheme.

Tannin • Calico • Butternut by Eddie Bauer Collection, Valspar

For the Fine Arts major, how about a beautiful still life? Again, the colors will be dark and bold to make them happy and it won't be black which will make you happy!

Saphire Sparkle • Fervent Brass • Cinnamon Cherry by Behr

Now what teenager wouldn't like to have a fire breathing dragon on their walls? I've seen posters very similar in many teenager's room but take it one step further and pull out the colors and put them on the walls!

Riverway • Pewter Green • Basque Green by Sherwin Williams

I know my son was into tornados for the longest time. Look at this excellent color scheme. As a matter of fact, his room is similar to the lighter blue in this pallet.

Pledge of Allegiance  •  Folk Festival •  Cordon Bleu by Dutch Boy

How about a scary lightening storm? Here you have vibrant blues and purples and you can even throw in a black wall for this color inspiration.

Choosing colors for a teenagers room … it's all about compromise and any of these schemes would be cool in my book! 1. So glad my teenagers didn't go thru the wanting black wall phase! I am in the process of re-decorating my 11th & 12th grade girls bedrooms & planning to sell my home in a few months. Because of this I had to consider what prospective buyers would think. My youngest chose a soft grey & going for a "shabby coastal cottage" vibe. My oldest was a little scarier since she is very artistic & creative. She chose a purple for the walls which is like the left color swatch under the picture with the eggplant. I was nervous, but it turned out gorgeous. The other colors in the room are white & black & silver.
I love your "tornado" color scheme.

  3. Pam - you did the right thing choosing a soft grey for that room if you plan on moving. I bet the shabby coastal looks great. Yes, the girls from age 9-16 I found flock to the purples - Cosmic Berry by Valspar is a popular choice. Good luck and thank you for the comment.

Kathy - I knew those colors would be a hit. I'll do a before and after on my blog when your done. Take good pictures and enjoy those grandbabies too! Thanks for the comments.
