Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who has the prettiest house of all?

We’d all love our homes to look like a page in Southern Living Magazine but how do we go about doing it?

Like anything else, decorating can be simple or very complex. It can be inexpensive or can run into the thousands’. With a few minor changes, you can turn a room from ordinary to extraordinary with very little effort.

The easiest and fastest way to change the look of a room is to change the color. Have some color schemes in mind before starting this project. Look through some home decorating magazines like Metropolitan Home, House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens or Town and Country. Again, you can keep the cost down by going to your local library and reading the selection of magazines they have. Most libraries have a large selection to choose from.

A new way to look at ceilings.  Many people just paint the ceilings white because they think that is the way it should be. Well why not paint it an ivory or a warm beige color? You might even be more daring and try a pastel color like a pale blue or a light sage green. Just remember, if you have a low ceiling, putting a color other then white on it will make it appear lower. If you have a high ceiling - this would be a great option for you to try.

Update your living room with a muted soft blue for your wall and light grey ceiling. Your family will enjoy the sophistication the moment they walk into the room. Rich, dark woods like cherry or mahogany add contrast to this room. Luxurious fabrics with silver, grey and creams are very inviting for this room. So few changes and already a room is transforming!

Congratulations! You just took the first step to redecoration your home.  Color is a great way to express yourself and to instantly change the look of a room. The most important thing to remember is have fun and open up your imagination. It’s just paint and accessories. If you don’t like the way a room turned out, you can always change it. Have confidence in yourself and enjoy!

  1. I just changed the window treatment in my dining room from white to a rich yellow (and softer thicker fabric), and it changed the entire feel of the room!

  2. One simple change Maya … one big difference. By warming up your window treatments, you changed the whole mood of your dining room. I bet it even looks nicer when the sun comes through that window now. Enjoy!

  3. You are so right about paint having such a huge impact. If someone feels they can't afford to make changes in their decor color is the best way to get a HUGE mood change for so little.

I'd repaint once a year if I could...sort of like bringing flowers in to a room.

  4. I really like the soft blue and grey paint choices paired with silver, grey, and cream fabrics. I agree, paint is so easy to change so why not go for it!
